Title
Critical Thinking in Human-Data Interaction
Abstract
Visualizations are highly effective at communicating data-relevant information. However, they can also exacerbate misinformation if not appropriately designed. Viewers therefore must be equipped with the skills to judge the quality of visualizations and navigate around misleading information. In my work, I examine the role of critical thinking in human-data interaction and aim to support both designers and viewers of visualizations to reason through data to form sound judgments. Specifically, I (1) developed enhanced measurements to assess people’s ability to evaluate visualization misinformation, (2) created a visualization framework to empower designers to reason about visualizations, and (3) designed an assessment to study how well visualization creators can visually encode data to help viewers make data-relevant judgments. These prior works are crucial building blocks for my overarching goal of fostering the public’s skills to critically evaluate and reason about visual (mis)information.
