Title

Learning to Simulate Aerosol Microphysics with Graph Neural Networks

Abstract

Aerosol particles, with their diverse physical and chemical properties, influence climate, weather, and air quality. However, their simulation has been computationally intensive due to the need for particle-resolved models that capture the intricacies of particle interactions. In this talk, we will explore the intersection of aerosol science and modern machine learning techniques, specifically graph neural networks (GNNs), to address these challenges. We’ll begin by discussing the fundamental aspects of aerosol science, followed by an introduction to GNNs. After sufficient background and context, we’ll explore the details of a graph-based learner and simulator for aerosol microphysics and chemistry. We’ll see some results of the current framework applied to a simple aerosol system, and conclude with a discussion of future work.
