Outline

Background

In recent years, a vast amount of data related to the properties of materials, natural phenomena, human and social activities, etc. has been accumulated and made available. Although it is believed that the key to resolving various social difficulties is inherent in these data, finding information that engenders solutions is difficult even though correlation among the data can be confirmed. The reality is that we often rely on the experience of experts. Moreover, resolving these issues necessitates the identification of important factors involved in a problem and the extraction of causal relations that represent the causes and effects of the data.

In addition to finding the essential factors that will engender solutions, it is fundamentally important to have experts in natural and social sciences, and to have engineers involved in data sciences and AI technologies.

Fujitsu and Tohoku University have established the “Fujitsu x Tohoku University Discovery Intelligence Laboratory” based on the Fujitsu Small Research Lab initiative and the Co-creation Research Center scheme of Tohoku University.
